Al Fischer is a professional musician from St. Louis and has been involved with the Gateway Men’s Chorus for many years, and in many capacities. Al was the Interim Artistic Director of the Chorus for their 21st season, leading them to the 2008 GALA Festival in Miami. For the next three seasons Al was the accompanist for the Chorus. Al has also served the group as a volunteer, an usher, and as the “Chorus Widow” of his partner of 20 years, Charlie Robin.
Locally, Al has served as music director for Stages St. Louis, doing such shows as A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, CRAZY FOR YOU, and HELLO DOLLY, for which he was nominated for a Kevin Kline Award. Also in St. Louis, Al served as an actor and music director for Metro Theater Company, where he composed the score for their acclaimed production of THE YELLOW BOAT. Al has worked around the country, directing music at the Little Theatre on the Square, Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse, the Riverside Theatre, and the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre.
Al currently splits his work among many musical jobs. In addition to his work for the Chorus, he a music teacher, church musician, and Reform Synagogue piano player. At other times he can be seen accompanying cabaret singers, doing piano gigs, and just generally being entertaining in and around St. Louis.
